Professional and Personal Goal Setting and Achievement
We don’t need a New Year to set goals. Truth is any day is an opportunity to set goals. I agree with Thomas Monson ‘You do not find the happy life. You make it’. Question is – what are you intentionally making?
Knowing what you want to achieve in life can help you stay motivated and committed even during the most challenging and darkest of hours. It’s good to carve out time regularly in our busy lives to think about our goals, where we are headed, if we are on course, and if not, how to steer back on course and to make sure that we take the necessary steps to lead towards our own success. After all, nothing happens in life without taking action.

After all, nothing happens in life without taking action.

If we are truly honest with ourselves, it’s easy to set goals, but even harder to think about the finer detail as to how you are going to get there, and what resources you need to help you. Often, we know what we want ultimately, but we are guilty of not investing enough to get there and when the next year rolls around we tell ourselves that we will make next year different – but then we don’t and the same thing happens again and again, year in, year out.
When we set goals that we don’t achieve, this can be demotivating and can lead us to think that the process of goal setting doesn’t work. The bottom line is this, we need to set goals, and consistently work towards them and adjust them if necessary. Life throws us curve balls and lessons (we only have to look at Covid and Brexit), being flexible and consistent in the pursuit of your goals is vital. Even the most successful celebrities and business owners have had ‘failures’. I use inverted commas as I personally do not like this word. Instead, we should reframe failure as lessons learned and ask ourselves ‘so what am I going to do differently next time?’
Goal setting is important for our overall health, wellness and balance in life. Joy, freedom, love, trust, happiness, health and choice. Goals need to be set beyond our professional selves, we all know what is going on in our personal life, can have a domino effect in our professional life and vice versa.

Walt Disney –
high school dropout and bankrupt at 22 years old when his second company failed. He sketched the idea that became Mickey Mouse and pitched it to bankers who laughed at him. Today, he is one of the world’s most famous names. He famously said: “The difference in winning and losing is most often not quitting.” And “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them”.
Beyonce –
she kept a photograph of an Academy Award by her treadmill where she saw it every day. Today, she is one of the world’s best-selling recording artists, the most nominated woman and second-most awarded person in Grammy history and Time Magazine has repeatedly named her one of the top 100 Most Influential People in the World. She famously said: “Power is not given to you. You have to take it.” And “Power means happiness; power means hard work and sacrifice.”
Michael Jordan –
visualised his name in a professional locker room, after being rejected by his high school basketball team for being too short. Today, he has won six championships and played 15 NBA seasons. He famously said: “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
Thomas Edison –
labelled stupid by his teachers, he invented the lightbulb. He famously said: “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” And “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realise how close they were to success when they gave up”.
